The country seeks to transform its appeal to Muslim travelers into greater commercial value through certification, quality and international recognition
Oman is moving forward with standards and certification to strengthen its position in halal tourism. The initiative aims to transform the country’s natural appeal to Muslim travelers into greater commercial value for hotels, restaurants, tourism operators and businesses connected to the consumer experience.
The topic was highlighted during a specialized workshop held in Salalah, focused on developing the halal ecosystem and tourism services for Muslim travelers. The agenda includes discussions on the standards of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries, the national halal system, the national standardization framework, the halal market and halal certification procedures.
According to information released by Oman’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the Global Muslim Travel Index projects international Muslim traveler arrivals to increase from 208 million in 2026 to 262 million by 2030, with annual expenditure expected to reach around US$310 billion. The movement shows that halal is not limited to food or industry. It is also connected to services, tourism, hospitality, food service, consumer experience, quality, safety and trust throughout the market journey.
For companies seeking to operate in Islamic markets, the development of halal standards reinforces the importance of certification, traceability and reliable processes as competitive advantages to access international audiences and opportunities.
