Malaysia Offers Halal Gateway for New Zealand into the ASEAN Market

During recent high-level trade talks in Wellington, Malaysia proposed a strategic role as New Zealand’s Halal distribution hub for the ASEAN region. The plan leverages Malaysia’s world-renowned Halal infrastructure and certification system to streamline exports of dairy, meat, seafood, and fruit from New Zealand into Southeast Asia.

The initiative seeks to reduce export barriers by harmonizing Halal requirements across the 10 ASEAN nations through a proposed ASEAN Halal Council. This council aims to introduce mutual recognition agreements and unified Halal production benchmarks.

For New Zealand, it’s a transformative opportunity to access over 650 million potential consumers, particularly in dynamic Halal markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. For Malaysia, the partnership reinforces its leadership in global Halal trade logistics.

With the ASEAN Halal Council expected to launch during MIHAS 2024, the groundwork is set for a new chapter in trans-Pacific Halal commerce.
