Brazil shipped 381,100 tons in May. UAE purchases was one of the highlights of the month, ABPA said.

Brazilian poultry exports were up 14.4% in May from a year ago, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) said this Friday (7). Brazil shipped 381,100 tons worth of unprocessed and processed chicken meat, up 48,000 tons year-on-year.

Revenue climbed even more, hitting USD 658.9 million, up 27.3% year-on-year. Year-to-date through May, poultry exports increased less, to 1.65 million tons, up 3.6%, and USD 2.7 billion, up 6.3%.

In May, the United Arab Emirates were one of the export destination highlights. Brazil sold the Arab country 30,700 tons, 8.2% of the total shipped volume and 49% more than a year ago.

According to ABPA, the major highlight of the month was China, which accounted for 14.7% of poultry exports from Brazil. The Asian country purchased 54,800 tons, up 49% from a year ago. The European Union increased its imports by 26%, to 26,200 tons.

“China has become the top destination for exports from Brazil. The market effect of the health crisis in the Asian country drove imports, which also had effects on profitability of the market with higher average prices,” said ABPA chairman Francisco Turra in the association’s release.

China was also Brazilian poultry largest market year-to-date through May, with 208,200 tons purchased and 12.8% of the total, but Saudi Arabia followed closely, with 195,00 tons and 12%. Japan was the third largest buyer in shipped volume, with 164,500 tons and 10.1% of the total, followed by the UAE, with 157,900 tons and 9.7% of the total, and South Africa, with 117,500 tons and 7,2%.
